Setting up a class
Create a class, share its class link, and manage who has access.
Create a class
On the Classes page, click New class and name it. Only teacher accounts can create classes.
Invite students
Students join in one of two ways, and neither needs an account first.
- Class link. A new class's link is off. Click Turn on class link under the class's name, and the link appears there, copied to your clipboard. Click the link to copy it again, or click the expand icon beside it to show its code full screen for a projector. Students open it, sign in with Google or email, and click Join class. The link works for 30 days. Anyone signed in who has it can join, so share it only with your class.
- Email invites. On the People tab, click Invite students by email and paste a list of addresses. Each student gets an email. They continue with Google, create a password, or sign in to their existing account, and they're in the class. Pending invites appear in the People list, and the menu on their row resends or revokes them.
A new class holds up to 100 members, counting teachers and pending invites. Email help@csroom.org if you need more.
Students who join late get every assignment you've already published.
The class tabs
A class has three tabs:
- Assignments lists every assignment. Open one to see each student's work on it, its instructions, and its settings.
- People lists teachers, students, and pending invites.
- Gradebook is the grid of students and scores.
Open in workspace opens the class in your own workspace, where its files are a folder you can edit.
Control access
The menu beside the class link has two options:
- Turn off stops the link at once. Students already in the class stay. Turning it back on makes a new link for another 30 days, so turn it off and on again if a link leaks.
- Limit emails lets only addresses at one domain, such as
school.org, join through the class link. Email invites still work for any address.
The People list shows a green dot next to anyone online now. To remove someone, choose Remove from class from the menu at the end of their row. Their scores leave the gradebook, and their files stay on their account.
To give a student a nickname, hover their row and click the pencil. You and the other teachers see the nickname in place of their name across the class, including the gradebook, its CSV export, and their workspace, and lists sort by it. Students never see it. Reset nickname in the row's menu goes back to the name on their account.
To rename the class, click the pencil beside its name.
Add another teacher
Every class has one owner, the teacher who created it. Other teachers help run it as admins.
Invite them like a student, by email or with the class link. Once they've joined, open People and choose Make admin from the menu on their row. Make student takes admin access away.
Admins can upload and publish assignments, see every student's work, grade, and invite or remove students. Only the owner can make or remove admins.
